| setting | where or when a story takes place; 1776, noon, winter, Saturday, jungle, 3:00, restroom |
| character | people, animals, or things that have an active part in the story's plot |
| context clue | words in the text that help identify or explain another word or phrase; synonyms |
| genre | the category used to classify or group literature or other works; types or kinds of literature, music, or art |
| graphic organizer | a way to visually organize information; chart, table, graph, t-chart, cluster, web |
| problem/solution | the arrangement of the story's plot that requires a solution |
| main idea | what the story is mostly about |
| summarize | to tell the short version of a long story; tell the most important parts, leave out the extra details; narrow it down to who, what, where, and when |
