| Simile | An indirect comparison between two things using like or as |
| Metaphor | A direct comparison that says something is something else |
| Personification | Inanimate objects are given human characteristics |
| Symbol | Something that stands for something else |
| Imagery | Words or groups that describe by using the five senses |
| Alliteration | Repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words |
| Assonance | Repetition of vowel sounds within a word |
| Onomatopoeia | Words whose sound resembles the actual sound |
| Colloquial language | Casual, everyday spoken words |
| Imperative | A verb that commands or gives instruction |
| Jargon | Language peculiar to a particular thing (like a sport or job etc) |
| Repetition | Repeated words or phrases |
| Listing | A sequence of things (like names, descriptions etc) |
| Rhyme | Repetition of identical or closely similar sounds |
| Enjambment | A line of poetry that runs on into the next line (no punctuation) |
| Adjective | A word that adds information/ description to a noun |
| Noun | Word that names things, ideas, people and places |
| Verb | Action word that also tells when something happened (tense) |
| Adverb | A word that adds information/description to the verb |
| Pronoun | Word that replaces a noun |
| Caesura | A pause within a line of poetry |
| Aphorism | A saying that gives an insight into life |
| Slang | Very informal English |
| Literal | Something that is actually happening |
