Speed and Velocity

| Term | Definition |

| Speed | It tells us how fast something is moving. It is the rate of change in distance over time. |
| Velocity | It tells us how fast something is moving and in what direction. It is the rate of change of displacement over time. |
| Average Speed | The total distance something traveled divided by the amount of time it took to go that distance. It tells us how fast an object moved on average. |
| Average Velocity | The total displacement of an object divided by the amount of time it took to go from its initial position to its final position. Since displacement is used, the average velocity includes direction. |
| Instantaneous Speed and Velocity | It is the speed or velocity at a single instant in time. The reading on a speedometer in a car is an example of instantaneous speed. |
| Vector | A quantity that has both magnitude and direction. |
| Scalar | A quantity that only has magnitude. |
| Magnitude | Size or amount of a quantity. |
