Vocabulary terms and Co-Teaching strategies

TermDefinition
Accommodation A slight alteration in a student's work to allow him/her to complete what is necessary to meet the same standards as his/her peers. For example, eliminating a choice in a multiple choice question for the student would be an accommodation.
Modification Completely altering an assignment to allow a student to complete the work necessary. Instead of completing an oral report, a student could have assistance in creating a PowerPoint.
Inclusion The philosophy of integrating students with disabilities into the general education population. For example, being in the state of mind to accept all learner and help them in anyway possible is a crucial component of inclusion.
Instructional Technology The practice of utilizing technology within the classroom. For instance, encouraging students to use the Smart Board, desktops, iPads, the ELMO, etc. to engage themselves in their learning.
Assistive Technology Technology that aids students with disabilities to complete the same tasks at their peers. It breaks down barriers to "level" the playing field. For example, in my classroom I have allowed a student with dysgraphia to utilize Scrabble tiles to spell.
Lead and Support As part of a co-teaching strategy, one teacher conducts the lesson, while the other drifts around the room to help students as needed. In my classroom, the support would be used for extension as well as assistance to students.
Station Teaching Another form of co-teaching that embraces the concept of content being given to students separately, and once the standards have been taught the groups switch. Each educator shows their knowledge. Learning centers would be beneficial to this technique.
Parallel Teaching Just as the strategy suggests, the two professionals plan with one another, but provide the lesson to two different groups. It allows for extra attention to the students because they are in more containable groups.
Alternative Teaching The element of collaboration is still present, although one educators is responsible for a different sized group than the other. Pulling students aside for extra assistance, or expanding on the lesson is imperative to meet the needs of all learners.
Team Teaching The educators share responsibility. It is more of a collaboration. The teachers work off one another and share ideas during the duration of the lesson. Both should engage learners and take an active role in the presentation.
