QuestionAnswer
speaker the persona or character speaking the poem

intended audience the recipient or listeners of the poem
imagery the use of language the appeals to the five senses
metaphor comparison of two unlike things
simile comparison of two unlike things using "like" or "as"
elegy a poem dedicated to someone who has died or passed away.
invocation the calling upon of Gods or Goddesses to assist in a task
setting, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution you should know this by now
quatrain 4 connected lines of poetry.
ruba'i Arabic poetic form of a quatrain. Omar Kayyam's Rubayyat is a series of these poems.
analogy a comparison of two things to show that they are alike in certain ways
didactic the tone of teaching, preaching, or instruction
antithesis the use of parallel structure for contrasting ideas.
