Natural selection a theory that states that organisms best adapted to their environment tend to survive and transmit their genetic characteristics to succeeding generations
Chromosomes long strands of genetic material found in the nuclei of all cells
Genotype the entire set of genes inherited by an organism
Phenotype the observable property that comes from a genotype
Gametes reproductive cells in an organism
Meiosis the process of cell division in which chromosomes duplicate themselves and the cell divides to form two new cells; the two new cells then divide again, resulting in four new cells created from the original cell
Mitosis the process of cell division in which chromosomes duplicate themselves before the cell divides, creating two cells genetically identical to the original
Sexual selection the process by which a mate is chosen
Selective breeding the process by which pairs of organisms of the same species with desirable characteristics are mated in order to select for those characteristics
Behavior genetics a field of study emphasizing the analysis of the effects of genes and environment on behavior and mental processes
Evolutionary psychology a branch of psychology involved with explaining the development of the human mind and behavior by studying how adaptive behaviors helped human
Artificial selection a concept that contrasts with natural selection in that humans are involved in selecting the desired characteristics to pass on to an organism's offspring
Species-typical behaviors instinctive or characteristic ways of
Social Darwinism a theory that states that society and culture evolved toward higher forms through the process of individuals adapting to hardship by either adapting and surviving or falling by the wayside
