Literary terms, plot events, characters, etc. from The Epic of Gilgamesh

| archetype | a recurring pattern in literature, history, and culture. EX: flood story, epic hero, tragic hero, creation story |
| epic hero | a hero of noble or god-like blood who goes on a long journey, fights against evil, and represents the ideals of his/her society. |
| setting | time and place of a story |
| conflict | trouble on the horizon or a problem that must be solved |
| rising action | things become more complicated in the conflict. |
| climax | when the conflict is taken head-on |
| falling action | the unraveling of the story as a result of the climax |
| resolution | the state of the world at the end of the story |
| protagonist | main character, i.e. who the story is about |
| theme | moral, lesson, or statement about the human condition that a story teaches. Sometimes stated; most of the time implied. |
| Gilgamesh | epic hero and main protagonist of the Epic of Gilgamesh. |
| Enkidu | friend of Gilgamesh who dies and whose death causes Gilgamesh to search for everlasting life |
| Humbaba | monster in the cedar forest whom Gilgamesh and Enkidu overcome |
| Utnapishtum | the only human to have everlasting life because he had survived the great flood. The story of the flood is similar to that of the Old Testament story. |
| Serpent | evil animal that steals the flower from Gilgamesh; this is an archetype as well for a serpent to be an evil character. |
| cuneiform | the wedge-shaped characters used in writing on the tablets of Ancient Mesopotamia. |
| Mesopotamia | "Land between the rivers," the two rivers being the Euphrates and the Tigris which run through modern day Iraq. |
| ziggurat | the stone temples build by the Ancient Mesopotamians and Sumerians |
| polytheism | the belief in many Gods and Goddesses who control the events of the world. It is evident in the Epic of Gilgamesh. |
