Julius Caesar characters

| Marcus Brutus | main character of the play; also the Tragic Hero. Motivated by honor and "the good of Rome." He is stoic. Joins the conspiracy against Caesar. |
| Caius Cassius | At first, he is the leader of the conspiracy against Caesar until Brutus joins. He is an Epicurean and a foil to Brutus. His emotions often dictate his words and actions. |
| Julius Caesar | At the beginning of the play, he is the powerful leader of Rome though his best days are behind him. We learn he has epilepsy and is deaf in one ear. Also he does not fear death and is overly arrogant at times "for always I am Caesar." |
| Mark Antony | Portrayed as fun-loving servant of Caesar in the first half of the play, he later gives the speech which causes the plebeians to riot against the murderers of Caesar and becomes a shrewd leader from Act IV onwards. |
| Octavius Caesar | Nephew to Julius Caesar and his heir, he first appears in Act IV of the play though he is clearly in charge by the end of the play. He is known for "Pax Romana" and gets to speak the last lines of the play. |
| Calpurnia | Caesar's wife who is sterile and who has dreams about Caesar's murder ahead of the actual event. |
| Casca | A senator who is in the conspiracy against Caesar. He actually stabs Caesar first. |
| Cinna, Metellus Cimber, Caius Ligarius, Decius Brutus, and other conspirators against Caesar. | Metellus Cimber is asking Caesar for the return of his brother, Publius, from exile which Caesar will not grant. Decius Brutus manipulate Caesar to go the capital. |
| Portia | Brutus' wife. She stabs herself in the leg to prove her constancy. We later learn she has committed suicide by swallowing fire. |
| Lepidus | Along with Marc Antony and Octavius Caesar, he is part of the Second Triumvirate who are in charge of Rome at the beginning of Act IV. He is later disposed of by Antony and Octavius. |
| Marcus Cato | He pretends to be Marcus Brutus in the battle at Philippi in the attempt to give Brutus some extra time either escape or commit suicide. |
| Titinius | friend of Cassius whom Cassius thinks was captured in the battle at Philippi. Cassius mistakenly commits suicide thinking his friend was captured. |
| Strato | soldier and friend of Brutus who holds the sword while Brutus runs on it to commit suicide. |
| Soothsayer | Known for saying "Beware the Ides of March" to Caesar. |
| Marullus and Flavius | Tribunes (basically officers of the law) who remove the commoners from the streets in Act I scene i. They are later put to death by Caesar for having done so, a reflection that Caesar's power may have grown too great. |
