| Term | Definition |

| Fault | A break in a body of rock along which one block slides in relation to another. |
| Deformation | Process by which rocks change shape when under stress. |
| Folding | Bending of rock layers due to stress |
| Compression | Stress that squeezes or pushes rock together |
| Tension | Stress that stretches or pulls rock apart |
| Shear Stress | Stress that pushes rocks in parallel but opposite directions. |
| Anticline fold | Fold which the oldest rock layers are at the fold’s center and youngest layers are outside the fold; peak at the center and arch downward at sides |
| Syncline fold | Fold which the youngest rock layers are at the fold’s center and oldest layers are outside the folds; rock layers form in bowl shape. |
| Uplift | Process that can cause land to rise can also contribute to mountain building. |
