Poetry Vocabulary 6P

Poetry words and definitions

TermDefinition
alliteration the repetition of consonant sounds, most often at the beginnings of words and syllables
ballad a poem that tells a story, usually written in four line stanzas
cinquain five-line, untitled poem, where the syllable pattern increases by two for each line with the last line ending in two syllables
haiku a form of Japanese poetry that consists of three lines, in which there are five, seven, and five syllables per line and is usually about nature
hyperbole figure of speech that uses exaggeration to express strong emotion or to create a comic effect
imagery words that create a picture for you - - it helps you see, hear, feel, smell, or taste what someone is writing about
limerick a funny poem written in five lines – the first two lines and the last two lines all rhyme - - the third and fourth lines rhyme, it often begins with, “There once was…”
metaphor a comparison between two unlike things without using “like” or “as”
onomatopoeia words that sound like their meaning
personification giving human characteristics or traits to non-living things
rhyme the same or similar sounds at the end of two or more words
simile a comparison between two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”
