Social scientific research methods enable an I/O psychologist to study a specific issue objectively
objectivity is the unbiased approach to observation and interpretations of behavior
How do we acquire/gain knowledge? Who do you get knowledge from? Ways of knowing: practice, experience, learning, reading *common sense, method of authority, intuition, most people use science to gain knowledge *the goals of I/O psy include the ability to describe, explain, and predict phenomena *as applied science
As applied science I/O psy also has the goal of attempting to control all outcomes
Research methods steps: *formulation of research problem- explicit not broad *formulation of research hypothesis->educated guess tentative answer to *review literature *define & clarify the variables- the work *research design
Research methods steps cont'd: *measurement of variable- measure your variable before research design the assignment of numbers, symbols or numerals to event, obj ideas according to rule *method of conducting the study- population (what was studied)
