Poetry Terms

List of poetry terms to study for your unit test and/or poetry terminology quiz

TermDefinition
Rhyme Matching the final sounds in words. Examples: dog, log, frog
Alliteration Matching beginning consonants. Examples: Sally, the silly snake slithers silently.
Assonance Matching vowel sounds within words. Examples: The good wood carver lives on Book Hook lane.
Consonance Matching consonantal sounds within words. Example: The seal swallowed the shellfish with relish.
Onomatopoeia Words that sound like what it is describing. Example: buzz, thump, boom
Images Details from the story that give you the clearest picture in your head.
Stanza The Italian word for room; a stanza in a poem is like a paragraph in a prose
Simlie A comparison of two things using the words "like" or "as". Example: Her eyes sparkle like diamonds. Her eyes are as blue sapphires.
Metaphor A comparison of two things that does not use like or as. Example: Her eyes were sparkling diamonds.
Mood The feeling in the poem that the author is trying to convey to the reader. Example: sad, somber, happy, gloom, doom
Tone The poet's attitude toward the reader or toward the subject of the poem.
