EOC Vocabulary

Structure of Atoms and Properties of Elements: 3

WordDefinitions
atom The smallest part of an element.
protons Positive subatomic particles in the nucleus of an atom.
neutrons Neutral subatomic particles in the nucleus of an atom.
electrons Negatively charged, and the smallest subatomic particles; found in a "cloud" around the nucleus of an atom.
orbitals (shells) Area where an electron is likely to be found.
valence shell The highest level orbital; the outer energy level of an atom.
subatomic particles protons, nuetrons, electrons
valence electrons Electrons in the outer energy level.
elements Substances that cannot broken into another substance. They are made of atoms with the same number of protons.
atomic number Number of protons in an atom of an element.
atomic mass Number of protons and neutrons in an atom of an element.
amu Atomic Mass Unit (Da)
Periodic Table Arranges all known elements by atomic number and the properties of elements.
periods Horizontal--- rows of the periodic table.
electron configuration How many valence electrons an element has.
Groups (Families) Vertical (up/down) columns on the periodic table which all have the same number of valence electrons.
metals Located on the left side of the periodic table; most are solid, hard, shiny, conduct heat and electricity. Usually give up electrons.
nonmetals Located on the right of the periodic table; usually gases or dull, brittle solids. Usually gain electrons.
metalloids Elements on the periodic table next to the bold, staircase line. They have properties of both metals and nonmetals.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
