QuestionAnswer
What are the main assumptions? No such thing as perfect, roots in childhood, structure of personality theory, psychosexual stages theory, 5/8 of mind is unconscious
How is abnormality caused? Intra-psychic conflict (imbalance of id, ego and superego), traumatic experiences, fixation on one of the psychosexual stages
Strengths Logical and coherent if base assumptions correct. Considers past experiences. No-one is perfect - ethical.
Weaknesses Difficult to falsify. Product of its time. Sexist. Based on case studies
What are the treatments? Psychoanalysis/talking cure (cathartic and transference), projective tests/free association/dream analysis (trauma in unconscious)
Strengths of treatments No dependence on drugs.
Weaknesses of treatments Bringing up stressful material may cause anxiety (exacerbates symptoms/unethical). Takes a long time.
