Chapter 14 Science Vocabulary

Atomic Number Number of protons in the nucleus
Alpha Decay When the nucleus ejects two protons and two neutrons
Beta Decay When a neutron in the nucleus splits into a proton and an electron
Electric Charge Found inside of Atoms but outside the nucleus
Electromagnetic Force Bound to the nucleus by the attractive force, electrons and protons
Energy Levels One of the discrete allowed energies for electrons in an atom
Isotopes Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus
Nucleus The tiny core at the center of an atom containing most of the atom's mass and all of it's positive charge
Strong Nuclear Force An attractive force between the proton and neutron; strongest force known to science
