| Term | Definition |

| DIRECT KNOWLEDGE | Knowledge that is acquired directly through experience. |
| INDIRECT KNOWLEDGE | Knowledge that is acquired indirectly by using reason to connect pieces of direct knowledge. |
| OPINION | A statement that is neither true nor false. |
| TRUE BELIEF | Plato argued that at least 2 conditions ust be fulfilled before anyone can claim to have knowledge: 1) Truth and 2) Belief. As a result, knowledge is sometimes defined as "true belief". |
| JUSTIFIED TRUE BELIEF | A definition of knowledge that says 3 conditions are necessary to claim knowledge: 1) a statement must be true. 2) a person must believe the statement is true. 3) a person must be justified in believing that the statement is true. |
| SKEPTICISM | A philosophical tool that leads philosophers to question assumptions. Extreme skepticism denies any knowledge at all is possible. |
| RATIONALISM | A theory that says that knowledge is a PRIORI. It comes from excersizing the human ability to reason. |
| EMPIRICISM | A theory that says that knowledge is a POSTERIORI. It comes from experience, or evidence present by the senses. |
| DETERMINISM | A theory that says that every event, including one's own choices and actions, is determined by a chain of causes extending in time. |
