| analogy | a similarity or comparison between two different things or the relationship between them |
| analyze | to examine carefully |
| antagonist | the character who works against the protagonist in the story |
| argument | a statement put forth and supported by evidence |
| assonance | the repetition of similar vowel sounds |
| character | a person or animal who takes part in the action of a literary work |
| claim | to state that something is true or factual |
| climax | most exciting moment of the story; turning point |
| cohesion | the action or fact of forming a whole |
| compare | comparing similarities between two or more ideas, stories, characters, things, etc. |
| contrast | the act of distinguishing by comparing differences |
| credible | capable of being believed |
| debate | discuss the pros and cons of an issue |
| delineate | describe in vivid detail |
| dynamic character | a character who grows, learns, or changes as a result of the story's action |
| elaborate | to explain in greater detail |
| evidence | supporting materials used to prove or disprove something |
| exposition | introduces the characters, setting, and basic situation |
| fact | a concept whose truth can be proved |
| falling action | events after the climax, leading to the resolution |
| figurative language | writing or speech that is not intended to carry literal meaning and is usually meant to be imaginative |
| first person perspective | one of the characters (using 'I') tells the story |
| genre | type of category of literary work (poetry, essay, short story, novel, fantasy, etc) |
| hyperbole | a figure of speech that uses exaggeration to express strong emotion, make a point, or evoke humor |
| direct characterization | the author directly states a character's traits |
| indirect characterization | the character is revealed through their personality, appearance, words, actions, and effects on others |
| inference | logical interpretation based on prior knowledge and experience |
| media | all public forms of communication, such as TV, radio, newspaper, internet, and advertisements |
| metaphor | a figure of speech comparing two unlike things without using like or as |
| onomatopoeia | the use of words that imitate sounds |
| opinion | a personal belief of judgement that is not founded on proof |
| personification | a figure of speech in which an object or animal is given human feelings, thoughts, or attitudes |
| pertinent | to the point; applying to the situation |
| plot | the sequence of events in a story |
| point of view | the perspective from which a story is told |
| protagonist | the main character, who must overcome obstacles and resolve the conflict |
| resolution | the final unraveling or solution of the plot |
| rising action | events leading up to the climax |
| root word | the basic word you start with before adding prefixes or suffixes |
| setting | when and where a story takes place |
| simile | a comparison using like or as |
| static character | character that stays the same, never changing |
| technical vocabulary | words that are used in a particular profession or area of interest |
| theme | the meaning of a text; often insight about human life |
| third person narration | story is told by the narrator who relates all action in third person, uses he or she |
| tone | author's attitude reflected in the style of the text |
| visual | able to be seen |
| cite | quote (a passage, book, or author) as evidence for an argument of statement |
| antonym | a word opposite in meaning to another word |
| author | the person who originates a piece of writing |
| author's purpose | the difference reasons why authors write something (to inform, entertain, or persuade) |
| autobiography | an account of a person's life written by that person |
| biography | an account of a person's life written by someone else |
| chronological | arranged in order of time of occurence |
| clarification | to make something clearer by using clues to determine its meaning |
| conflict | struggle of persons or forces that gives rise to the dramatic action |
