| frustration | when our efforts to pursue our goals are blocked |
| PTSD | a pattern of adverse reactions following a traumatic or life-threatening event |
| acculturative stress | demands faced by immigrants adapting to a host culture |
| hassles | the daily annoyances of everyday life |
| General Adaptation Syndrome | Seyle's concept of the body's adaptive response to stress in three stages: alarm, resistance, and exhaustion |
| lymphocytes | the two types of white blood cells that are part of the body's immune system |
| antigens | fight disease through vaccination |
| vaccination | administering a dead or weakened disease in order to boost antibodies |
| interleukin-6 | stimulates growth and function of lymphocytes and antibodies; prolonged stress and can lead to heart disease or diabetes |
| coronary heart disease | disease when the flow of blood to the heart is insufficient |
| atherosclerosis | condition in which plaque builds up on the inner walls of the arteries |
| heart attack | a sudden severe instance of abnormal heart function |
| STDs | sexually transmitted diseases; AIDs, HPV |
| social psychology | how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by our social interactions |
| social perceptions | a process by which we form impressions, make judgements, and develop attitudes about people and events that constitute our social world |
| impression formation | the process by which a person uses behavior and appearance of others to form attitudes about them. |

| Actor-Observer Effect | the tendency to attribute behavior solely to external causes |
| self-serving bias | tendency to attribute our successes to internal causes while blaming failures on external causes |
| attitudes | evaluation or judgement of liking or disliking a person, object, or event |
| cognitive dissonance | unpleasant mental experience of tension resulting from two conflicting thoughts or beliefs |
| attraction | the quality of arousing interest |
| Sternberg's Love Triangle | intimacy, passion, and commitment |
| bystander intervention | the act of helping strangers in an emergency situation |
| helping behavior | any act that is intended to benefit another person. |
| prejudice | an opinion or strong feeling formed without careful thought or regard to the facts |
| racism | discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of another race |
| discrimination | unfair treatment of a person or group on the basis of prejudice |
| stereotype threat | a self-confirming concern that one will be evaluated based on a negative stereotype |
| aggression | a feeling of hostility that arouses thoughts of attack |
| personal identity | your sense of yourself as a unique individual |
| social facilitation | stronger responses on simple or well-learned tasks in the presence of others |
