| Term | Definition |

| lyric poem | shows feelings and emotions or poet, often romantic or descriptive, a sonnet is a lyric |
| epic | REALLY long poem, heroic adventures |
| sonnet | 14 lines, ends with rhyming couplet, often about love |
| dramatic poetry | one or more characters SPEAK |
| ballad | poem intended to be sung |
| narrative poem | tells a story |
| iambic pentameter | five sets/feet of a soft/hard, Shakespeare |
| blank verse | poem has meter like iambic pentameter but doesn't rhyme |
| free verse | no meter or rhyme |
| internal rhyme | a rhyme inside a line of poetry |
| end rhyme | the words at the end of the line rhyme |
| stage directions | usually written in italics, tell characters where to stand or what to do |
| dialogue | speaking of characters |
| soliloquy | solo guy speaking his thoughts on stage alone |
| monologue | long speech by a character who is not alone on stage |
| aside | when characters move to the side of the stage so it looks like they're having private conversation |
