Week 4 - PEDS 293

Fundamental Movement Skills

What are the three FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENT SKILLS? STABILITY/FOCUS (steady body in equilibrium), LOCOMOTION (how the body moves), and MANIPULATION (propelling, receiving, retaining)
What is the key to GOOD OBSERVATION? Reserve judgement, watch the movement several times, start off with a side view, minimize distractions, watch from different angles, and watch the overall movement before specific parts.
What is the PROGRESSION OF SKILL DEVELOPMENT? 1) INITIAL (lack of coordination/precision, missing/mixing steps) 2) FORMATIVE (greater control, but still lacking) 3) MATURE (efficient, coordinated, and controlled)
What are some basic LOCOMOTOR movement skills? Running, dodging, sprinting, skipping, galloping, and jumping.
What are some basic STABILITY movement skills? Standing on one foot, and log rolling.
What are some MANIPULATIVE movement skills? Underhand rolling, underhand throw, kick, pass, striking, and catching.
What is fundamentally important when learning movement skills? Focus on QUALITY PERFORMANCE and QUANTITY PRACTICE
