Why is it so important to promote physical activity? - To enhance future health by increasing the probability children will remain active as adults.
For what reasons are activity levels of children decreasing? - Increases in Technology - Safety concerns - Competition with video games - Too many "supervised programs" instead of free play.
Whose role is it to provide children with quality activity experiences? Parents, teachers, and coaches.
How can you increase participation rates? Through intrinsic motivation (enjoyment), support, democratic teaching styles (give them autonomy!), alleviating chronic anxiety for performances.
What is physical literacy? Those who are physically literate MOVE WITH COMPETENCE in a WIDE RANGE OF SKILLS that benefit the WHOLE PERSON.
What is Whitehead's definition of Physical Literacy? - Ability to capitalize on MOVEMENT POTENTIAL - Move with POISE, ECONOMY AND CONFIDENCE - Creation of a well established POSITIVE, SELF-CONFIDENT SENSE OF SELF
