ELA Terms
These are common ELA terms
| Term | Definition |

| Alliteration | - two or more words close together that begin with the same sound, as in “the blue barge of Bermuda” |
| Antonym | a word that means the opposite of another |
| Audience | the people who will read a particular piece of writing |
| Conclusion | The last paragraph of an essay |
| Editing | to correct writing for errors in mechanics, spelling, or usage |
| Expository | a type of essay which has the purpose of explaining something |
| Fiction | the class of literature comprising works of imaginative narration |
| Imagery | in writing, words that causes readers to get a picture in their minds |
| Introduction | the first paragraph of an essay which contains an attention grabber and a thesis statement |
| Metaphor | a comparison between two unlike things by stating one thing is another, such as “They was a friend in a time of need.” |
| Onomatopoeia | the formation of a word, as cuckoo or boom, by imitation of a sound made by or associated with its referent. |
| Personification | give life-like features to something non-living. For example, “The keyboard winked at me as I typed my name.” |
| Persuasive | A type of essay that attempts to make the reader believe a certain way |
| Revising | the stage of writing where you try to make your writing better by substituting, adding, subtracting, or moving words |
| Simile | a figure of speech in which two unlike things are e compared using the word “like” or “as,” as in “she is like a rose.” |
| Topic sentence | a sentence that captures the meaning of the entire paragraph or group of sentences |
| Transitions | Words or sentences that are used to connect one thought to the next in writing |
