chapter 15 waves

Physical science

QuestionAnswer
What is a wave? A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place
What is a medium? The material through which a wave passes through.
What are mechanical waves? Waves that require a medium through which to travel.
What is a vibration? The repeated back-and-forth or up-and-down motion.
What are transverse waves? Waves that move in the medium through a right angle to the direction in which the waves travel.
What is a crest? A high point of a wave.
What is a trough? A low point in a wave.
What are longitudinal waves? Waves that move the direction in which the waves travel.
What are compressions? The parts where the coils that are close together.
What are rarefactions? The parts where the coils are spread out.
What is amplitude? The maximum distance that the particles of the medium carrying the wave move away from their rest positions.
What is frequency? The number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time.
What is a reflection? The interaction with a surface.
What is the law of reflection?
