What is "field of view"? Area that is visible.
If you learn how to use them, what do x-rays and radiowaves do for us? X-rays and radiowaves can reveal things not visible to the naked eye.
Are mountains and valleys permanent landmarks or temporary? Mountains and valleys are only temporary features on Earth as they are constantly changing.
How often does Earth make a complete rotation on it's axis? Earth makes one complete rotation on it's axis every 24 hours.
In what direction does Earth rotate? Earth rotates Eastward on it's axis.
How does the moon's size compare to the Earth's? The moon's diameter is about 1/4 the length of the Earth.
What is the distance from Earth to it's moon in miles? The distance from Earth to the moon is about 240,000 miles, 380,000 kilometers.
What is scientific notation? Scientific notation is a shorter way to write out very large numbers with a lot of zeros and very small numbers with a lot of numbers to the right of the decimal place.
In scientific notation, how would you write 380,000? 3.8 x 10^5
What does the solar system consist of? (Hint: there are five) The solar system consists of the sun, it's family of planets, and some small bodies including moons, asteroids, and comets.
What are planets? Planets are small, non-luminous bodies that shine by reflecting the sun's light.
Earth is about the same size as what planet in our solar system? Earth is about the same size as Venus.
How does the size of Mercury compare to the size of the Earth's moon? Mercury is a little larger than Earth's moon.
What are stars? Stars are luminous balls of gas that generate their own energy.
How does the size of the sun compare to the size of the Earth? The sun is about 110 times larger in diameter than the Earth.
How long does it take for Earth to orbit the sun? It takes one year for Earth to make one complete orbit around the sun.
How long is one AU? One AU is the distance from the Earth to the sun.
In miles, how far is the Earth from the sun? The Earth is about 93 million miles from the sun.
Do the major planets have perfectly circular orbits? No, the major planets have slightly elliptical orbits.
How long does it take light from the sun to reach Earth? It takes about 8 minutes for light from the sun to reach Earth.
Is Pluto still considered a major planet? No, Pluto is no longer considered a major planet.
How long is one light year (ly)? One light year is the distance that light travels in one year.
What is the nearest star to the sun? The closest star to the sun is Proxima Centauri.
In astronomical diagrams, what does the size of stars represent? The sizes of the dots represent not the sizes of the stars, but their brightness.
What fills the spaces in-between stars? A thin gas fills the space between stars.
What does the thin gas between stars give birth to? The thing gas gives birth to new stars.
How long ago did our sun form? The sun formed about 5 billion years ago.
In our galaxy, where is the sun located? Our sun is located 2/3 of the way from the center of the Milky Way galaxy.
Galaxies are commonly grouped into what? Galaxies are commonly grouped into "clusters".
What are clusters of galaxies grouped into? Clusters of galaxies are grouped into "superclusters".
Superclusters of galaxies are linked to form what? Superclusters are linked together to form long filaments and walls.
What are the largest known structures in the universe? The largest known structures in the universe are the filaments and walls created by links of superclusters.
How many light years is the Milky Way Galaxy in diameter? Our galaxy is about 80,000 ly in diameter.
Why are planets around other stars difficult to detect? Planets around other stars are difficult to spot because they reflect too little light to be visible so near to the brilliance of a star.
On a photograph of the planet Earth, how can you tell the sunset line from the sunrise line? You can tell which side of the Earth is the sunset line because it will be blurred along the edge.
What is the outermost planet in our solar system? Neptune is the outermost major planet in our solar system.
What is the difference between the Milky Way and the Milky Way Galaxy? The Milky Way is a band of stars visible around the Earth, the Milky Way Galaxy is the galaxy in which we reside.
