Term | Definition |

Inertia | The tendency of an object to move in a straight line. |
Simple Machines | A machine that does work with one movement and makes work easier by reducing the effort needed to move a load or change its direction. |
Mass | The amount of matter in an object. |
Effort | The energy used to move a load or change its direction |
Balanced Forces | Forces that are equal and opposite and produce no change in the motion on an object. |
Unbalanced Forces | Forces that produce change in the motion of the object in the direction of the greatest force. |
Inclined Plane | A flat, sloping surface that can be used to reduce the effort of lifting a load. |
Pulley | A wheel and a rope to lift a load over short distances. |
Wedge | Two inclined planes joined back to back used to split things. |
Screw | An inclined plane wrapped around a shaft or cylinder. |
Wheel and Axel | A larger wheel connected by a smaller cylinder that is fastened to the wheel so that they turn together. |
Lever | A straight rod or board that pivots on a point known as a fulcrum. |
Load | the force to be moved |
Work | the effort used to move a load |
