TermDefinition
Inertia The tendency of an object to move in a straight line.
Simple Machines A machine that does work with one movement and makes work easier by reducing the effort needed to move a load or change its direction.
Mass The amount of matter in an object.
Effort The energy used to move a load or change its direction
Balanced Forces Forces that are equal and opposite and produce no change in the motion on an object.
Unbalanced Forces Forces that produce change in the motion of the object in the direction of the greatest force.
Inclined Plane A flat, sloping surface that can be used to reduce the effort of lifting a load.
Pulley A wheel and a rope to lift a load over short distances.
Wedge Two inclined planes joined back to back used to split things.
Screw An inclined plane wrapped around a shaft or cylinder.
Wheel and Axel A larger wheel connected by a smaller cylinder that is fastened to the wheel so that they turn together.
Lever A straight rod or board that pivots on a point known as a fulcrum.
