5-Reading Vocabulary

These terms will help you understand the questions on important tests. :)

theme message or statement about life in the story
compare to find the similarities
contrast to find the differences
main idea what a piece of writing is mainly about
details pieces of information that support or tell more about the main idea
setting the time and place of a story
plot the sequence of events in a story
conflict the problem or challenge characters face in a story
resolution the ending to the story that states the final outcome of the conflict and/or what might lie ahead for the characters in the story
climax the point of highest interest, the conflict must be resolved one way or another or a character begins
inference a conclusion one draws (infers) based on premises or evidence
figurative language language employing one or more figures of speech (simile, metaphor, imagery, etc.)
simile a figure of speech comparing two unlike things using "like" or "as"
metaphor a figure of speech comparing two unlike things without using "like" or "as"
idiom an expression that cannot be understood if taken literally (ex- "get your head out of the clouds").
adage/proverb an anonymous saying regarding advice or wisdom, example: "A penny saved is a penny earned."
antonym a word that means the opposite of another word
synonym a word that means the same as another word
homonym a word spelled exactly like another word but having a different meaning
point of view the perspective from which a story is told (first person, second person, third person)
characterization method used by a writer to develop a character
moral a message conveyed or a lesson to be learned from a story or event
persuade advising or urging one to believe by appealing to reason or understanding
rising action central part of a story during which various problems arise, leading up to climax
viewpoint the circumstances of an individual that lead to an attitude
alliteration repetition of beginning sounds
falling action the part of the story which follows the climax or turning point; it contains the action or dialogue necessary to lead the story to a resolution or ending
literary device a literary technique that produces a specific effect (i.e. figure of speech)
literary element components of a literary piece; character, setting, plot, theme, ending/resolution
personification inanimate objects are given human qualities or are represented as possessing human form
imagery the use of vivid or figurative language to represent objects, actions, or ideas
onomatopoeia words that represent sounds
