sound

TermDefinition
vibration a repeated back and forth or up and down motion
transverse wave travels through a medium, matter moves up and down as the wave travels through it
compressional wave matter moves back and forth as the wave travels through it
compression vibration of a spring's coils when particles are pushed together
rarefaction an area where particles are spread apart
troughs the bottom part of the wave
absorption the transfer of energy when a wave disappears into a surface
pitch how high or low a sound is
doppler effect An observed change in the frequency of a wave when the source or observer is moving
volume the difference in the loudness of a sound
decibels Unit for measuring loudness
constructive interference combined sound waves of the stereos would produce a louder sound than that from one stereo alone
destructive interference when the crest of one wave meets the trough of another
sound quality same pitch and amplitude in various instruments
rhythm sound that is interpreted as musical
crest top of the wave
wave a disturbance that transfers energy from one point to another
wavelength the distance between two waves' crests or two waves' troughs
amplitude the height of a wave from its trough or crest to its midpoint
frequency a measure of how many wave crests or troughs pass a given point in one unit of time
