Force&Motion

For science class

QuestionAnswer
What does acceleration mean? The rate at which velocity changes.
What does Air Resistance mean? The fluid friction experienced by objects falling through the air.
What is Archimedes' principle? The rule that the buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid the object displaces.
What is average speed? The overall rate of speed at which an object moves; calculated by dividing the total distance an object travels by the total time.
What are balanced forces? Equal forces action on an object in opposite directions.
What is Bernoulli's principle? The rule that a stream of fast moving fluid exerts less pressure than the surrounding fluid.
What is buoyant force? The upward force exerted by a fluid on a submerged object.
What is centripetal force? A force that causes an object to move in a circle.
What is a compound machine? A device that combines two or more simple machines.
What does efficiency mean? The percent of the input work that is converted to output work.
What does fluid mean? A material that can easily flow.
What is fluid friction? Friction that occurs as an object moves through a fluid.
What is force? A push or pull exerted on an object.
What is friction? The force that one surface exerts on another surface when the two surfaces rub against each other.
What is a fulcrum? The fixed point around which a lever pivots.
What is gravity? The force that pulls objects toward each other.
What is an inclined plane? A simple machine that is a flat, sloped surface.
What is inertia? The tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion
What is a lever? A simple machine that consists of a rigid bar that pivots about a fixed point.
What is a machine? A device that changes the amount of force exerted, the distance over which a force is exerted, or the direction in which force is exerted.
What is mass? The amount of matter in an object.
What is mechanical advantage? The number of times a machine increases a force exerted on it.
What is momentum? The product of an object's mass and velocity.
What is motion? The state in which one object's distance from another is changing.
What is net force? The overall force on an object when all the individual forces acting on it are added together.
What is the definition of newton? A unit of measure that equals the force required to accelerate 1 kilogram of mass at 1 meter per second per second.
What is the definition of pascal? A unit of pressure equal to one newton per square meter.
What is Pascal's principle? The rule that when force is applied to a confined fluid, the increase in pressure is transmitted equally to all parts of the liquid.
What is power? The rate at which work is done.
What is a pulley? A simple machine that consists of a grooved wheel with a rope or cable wrapped around it.
What is a reference point? A place or object used for comparison to determine if the object is in motion.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
