TermDefinition
Fossil The preserved remains or traces of living things.
Sedimentary Rock The type of rock that is made of hardened sediment.
Mold A hallow area in sediment in the shape of an organism or part of an organism.
Cast A solid copy of the shape of an organism.
Petrified Fossils Fossils in which minerals replace all or part of an organism.
Carbon Film An extremly thin coating of carbon on rock.
Trace Fossils. Fossils that provide evidence of the activities of an organism.
Paleontologists Scientists who study fossils.
Scientific Theory A well-tested concept that explains a wide range of observations.
Evolution The gradual change in living things over long periods of time.
Extinct No longer exists and will never again live on earth.
Relative Age A rocks age compared to the ages of other rocks.
Absolute Age A rocks number of years since the rock formed.
Law of Superposition A law that geologists use to determine the relative ages of sedimentary rock layers.
Extrusion Lava that hardens on the surface.
Intrusion When the lava beneath the surface turns into rock.
Fault A break in Earth's crust.
Unconformity A gap in the geologic record.
Index Fossil Certain fossil that helps scientists match rock layers.
