Library 1st test

primary, secondary, and tertiary resources

QuestionAnswer
advantages of tertiary resources are easily accessible, easy to use, complete and concise
advantages of secondary systems efficient access to the primary literature (ease, speed, retrieval), quality journals in general, large scope of information, information is updated often, can be scanned on regular basis to help keep abreast of advances in a particular area,
advange of primary resources it is the principal source of new, state of the art drug and therapy information, recent information, detailed information, complete information needed to fulfill and specific request or resolve a patient problem
disadvange of primary resources are impossible to keep current, involves the necessity to critically analyze and interpret the reports retrieved, vary in their accuracy, validity and generalization, needs skills to use, inability to obtain the actual article needed in a timely manner, costly
what is the main purpose of abstracting services such as secondary resources to provide summaries of primary literature articles in addition to the citation for that article
disadvantage of secondary needs skills to be proficient in searching the databases, doesn't give full text all the time, lag time varies between different sources, large amount of information, sifting is required, search techniques required, (cost but don't understand why??)
disadvantage of tertiary resource outdated information, erros in trascription, incorrect interpretation, lack of expertise of authors, lack depth and detail about specific topis are often absent
much of the information on the internet could be classifed as tertiary literature
disadvanges of the internet lacks the quality control foudn for many journals and texts so must be serutinized closely, finding information can be slow and frustration, selecting a search engine to use is not always easy and don't retrieve the same information
