| Powerless Language | Language that creates the perception of powerlessness. |
| Communication Accommodation Theory | This argues that when we communicate with others we adjust our style of speaking to their style in order to gain approval and increase communication efficiency. |
| Connotative Meaning | Thoughts or emotions connected with the word |
| Denotative Meaning | This is the direct dictionary definition of a word |
| Symbol | This is something that represents something else |
| Ultimate Terms | Words or phrases that are highly revered, widely accepted, and carry special power in a culture. |
| Devil Terms | Words that carry the association of absolutely disgusting or abhorrent. |
| Charismatic Terms | Words that have a power that in some ways is mysteriously given. |
| Labeling | How things are labeled effect how perceive them and reflect our attitudes towards them. |
| Sapir Whorf Hypothesis | The language we use determines the way we understand the world. |
| Doublespeak | The practice of using words to make the worse appear the better (and vise versa). Using ambiguous or evasive language. |
| Political Correctness | this refers to issues of inclusive speech and advocacy of nonracist, nonageist, and nonsexist terminology. |
| Language Intensity | the quality of language which indicates the degree to which the speaker’s attitude deviates from neutrality |
| Reinforcement Theory | this assumes that people are motivated to avoid pain and seek pleasure. Language intensity increases the effects agreeing or disagreeing with a position. |
| Language Expectancy Theory | This assumes that we have expectations about what types of language are normal to use when trying to persuade others. When a speaker violates those expectations it can help or hurt their effectiveness depending on the perceived positiveness or negativness |
| Information Processing Theory | We must have the concepts to be able to process correctly |
| Euphemisms | The practice of using words to make the worse appear the better (and vise versa).using inoffensive terms substituted for offensive ones. |
