Intellectual property and Copyright definitions
| Term | Definition |

| Access Copyright | The agency in Canada responsible for the copy rights of authors, publishers, and various institutions. |
| Copyright | Legal ownership over intellectual property. Protects Original creations of expression, not ideas. Effective during life of author + 50years |
| Intellectual Property | non-physical creations that the owner holds the copyright for. Ex: Songs, lectures |
| Royalty | monetary payments owed to the creator of a work of intellectual property, for permission to use the creators work. |
| Trade-Marks | differentiate one company's/manufacturer's goods and/or services from others. Ex: logo, names, marks |
| Public Domain | Works that are available to the public. One does not need the creators permission to utilize these works. The copyright law does not apply to work in the public domain. |
| Moral Rights | Includes 3 domains: Right of Association ((can refuse anyone from using the work), Paternity (attribution), and Integrity (owner can disallow modification of work) |
| Performing Rights | the rights pertaining particularly to musicians/composers. Must obtain their permission to use their works of music, often paying a royalty to the creator. |
| Plagiarism | Claiming (the whole or partial) work as your own that is the intellectual property of another author, without properly giving credit to the creator. |
| Fair Dealing | Reasonableness; The amount of the work used by another (de minimis). Fair dealings take into consideration the purpose the work is being used for. It is permissible to use the work for educational purposes. |

| Blanket Liscense | Pertaining to music performance rights, it allows the use of the authors music without the need to obtain permission or pay a royalty every time the music is performed. Ex: radio stations |
