Antihelminthic Drugs

What is the mechanism of action in albendazole and mebendazole? What additional thing does mebendazole do? Albendazole and Mebendazole inhibit microtubule synthesis. Mebendazole additionally block helminthic glucose uptake.
What is the drug of choice to treat river blindness? Onchocerciasis volvulus (aka river blindness) caused by the black fly is best treated with ivermectin. Ivermectin works by binding to glutamate gated Cl- channels and paralyzing the helminths via hyperpolarization.
What helminths can be treated best with the drug albendazole? Hookworm disease (N. americanus or A. duodenale) , Hydatid disease (E. granulosus, E. multilocularis), Ascariasis lumricoides (roundworm), **T. solium (pork tapeworm)
What helminths can be treated best with the drug mebendazole? Enterobiasis (anal itching), Hook worm disease, Trichinosis (undercooked pork), Trichuriasis (whip worm)

What is the mechanism of action for praziquantel? Praziquantel increases the helminths calcium cell membrane permeability killing them via paralysis.

What is the mechanism of action for pyrantel pamoate (Pin-x)? Causes release of ACh and inhibition of cholinesterase
What helminths can be treated best with the drug doxycycline ? W. bancrofti and onchocerciasis volvulus
