CH 14 Vocab Physical

Definitions for physical science

TermDefinition
Wave Disturbance that carries energy through matter or space.
Medium The matter through which the wave travels
Mechcanical Wave Waves that require the medium
Electromagnetic Wave Light waves
Transverse Wave Waves in which the particles are perpendicular to the motion
Longitudial Wave Waves that cause the particles in a medium to vibrate
Crest The highest point of transverse waves
Trough The lowestt points of transverse waves
Amplitude The greatest distance the particles are placed from eachother
Wavelength The distance from one crest to another
Period The time required for one full wavelength
Frequency The number of full wavelengths that pass a given point
Doppler Effect The motion of the force or observer
Reflection The bouncing back of a wave
Diffraction The bending of waves as they pass
Refraction The reason the waves bend
Interference A new wave that is different from the other waves
Constructive interference The sum of two indivdual waves formed by amplitudes
Destructive Interference When the crest of one wave meets the other
Standing Wave Can form when a wave is reflecting at the boundary of a medium
