| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Wave | Disturbance that carries energy through matter or space. |
| Medium | The matter through which the wave travels |
| Mechcanical Wave | Waves that require the medium |
| Electromagnetic Wave | Light waves |
| Transverse Wave | Waves in which the particles are perpendicular to the motion |
| Longitudial Wave | Waves that cause the particles in a medium to vibrate |
| Crest | The highest point of transverse waves |
| Trough | The lowestt points of transverse waves |
| Amplitude | The greatest distance the particles are placed from eachother |
| Wavelength | The distance from one crest to another |
| Period | The time required for one full wavelength |
| Frequency | The number of full wavelengths that pass a given point |
| Doppler Effect | The motion of the force or observer |
| Reflection | The bouncing back of a wave |
| Diffraction | The bending of waves as they pass |
| Refraction | The reason the waves bend |
| Interference | A new wave that is different from the other waves |
| Constructive interference | The sum of two indivdual waves formed by amplitudes |
| Destructive Interference | When the crest of one wave meets the other |
| Standing Wave | Can form when a wave is reflecting at the boundary of a medium |
