| Term | Definition |

| Hyperbole | is an exaggeration. ~Ex.I'm so hungry I could eat a horse |
| Metaphor | compares two things without using the words like or as. ~Ex. The lake was a shining, silver mirror. |
| Personification | is giving human characteristics to something that is not human. ~Ex. the fog crept in on little cat feet. |
| Simile | is a comparison between two things that uses the words like or as. ~Ex. the balloon rose like a moon. |
| Tone | is created by the author's use of language. A dark tone, for example: A dark tone, for example, indicates something somber and negative. |
| Imagery | is description meant to elicit a sensory experience:A reader sees, tastes, smells, feels, or hears what is being described. |
| Symbolism | uses a person, place, or object to represent something completely different. A childhood toy can be a symbol of all that has been lost. |
| Allusion | is an implied or indirect reference to a person, place, or thing that is fictitious, historical, or real. A "Benedict Arnold" is a traitor. |
| Understatement | minimizes or lessens the importance. In desert heat, a character says, "My, it's warm today." This is the opposite of hyperbole. |
| Irony | is a situation or a statement that is teh opposite of what was expected, such as saying one thing and meaning the opposite. "That's small," Ted said looking at a whale |
| Paradox | is a statement that at first seems self-contradictory. A little learning is a dangerous thing. |
