poetry characteristics
| Term | Definition |

| Lyric | Shares the personal feelings of the speaker |
| Narrative | Tells a story |
| Ballad | Like a story; may have a refrain |
| Epic | About a series of quests undertaken by a hero |
| Ode | praises (celebrates) a person or object |
| Sonnet | Always has 14 lines |
| Elegy | For someone who has died |
| Free Verse | No regular rhyme scheme or meter |
| Lyric | Implies, rather than states directly, a single, strong emotion |
| Narrative | Among the oldest forms of poetry |
| Ballad | About betrayal, death, and/or loss |
| Epic | Long narrative poem which uses formal language |
| Elegy | Sometimes can mourn a way of life that is gone forever |
