Ode praises (celebrates) a person or object
Sonnet Always has 14 lines
Elegy For someone who has died
Free Verse No regular rhyme scheme or meter
Lyric Implies, rather than states directly, a single, strong emotion
Narrative Among the oldest forms of poetry
Ballad About betrayal, death, and/or loss
Epic Long narrative poem which uses formal language
Elegy Sometimes can mourn a way of life that is gone forever
