| hydrophilic | water loving; any substance that easily mixes in water |
| hydrophobic | water hating; any substance that does not mix or dissolve in water |
| levigation | triturating a powdered drug with a solvent in which it is insoluble to reduce its particle size |
| mortar and pestle | bowl and rounded knob used to grind substances into fine powder |
| ointment | hydrophobic product such as petroleum jelly |
| oleaginous base | ingredient used in compounding that does not dissolve in water |

| reconstitution | to mix a liquid and a powder to form a suspension or solution |
| repackaging | act of reducing the amount of medication taken from a bulk bottle |
| solute | ingredient that is dissolved into a solution |

| solvent | greater part of a solution that dissolves a solute |
| spatulation | use of a spatula to mix ingredients into creams or ointments after levigation |
| strip pack | strip of heat-sealed packets each holding one tablet or capsule used in the repackaging process |
| suspension | solution in which the powder does not dissolve into the base and must be shaken well before use |

| triturate | to grind or crush powder into fine particles |
