Feeding intervention

OT intervention for oral motor control of infants and children

QuestionAnswer
Facilitating lip closure Apply slight upward pressure of index finger under child's lip
Facilitating jaw closure Firm upper pressure of the middle finger under jaw
Facilitate swallow Lip closure, placement and slight downward pressure of the spoon on middle aspect of tongue
Faciliate chewing Place food between gum and teeth
Hand position of caregiver Index finger under lip, middle finger under jaw, thumb on lateral end of mandible
What to do in presence of tonic bite reflex? Firm downward pressure, using special spoon, on middle aspect of tongue
What to do in presence of tongue thrust? Prevent drooling by facilitating lip closure.
Decrease tactile sensitivity Firm pressure, rub gums palate and tongue, NUK brush, vary food texture, encourage sucking on cloth
