| acne vulgaris | commonly known as pimples and occurs when the pores of the skin are clogged with oil or bacteria. |
| analgesic | medication that relieves pain by reducing the perception of pain. |
| anaphylactic shock | severe allergic reaction that causes a rapid decrease in the blood pressure. ventricular tachycardia, and constriction of the airways. a medical emergency that will cause death if not treated immediately. |
| antigen | stimulates the production of antibodies. |
| anti-inflammatory | medication that reduces swelling, redness and pain and promotes healing. |
| antipyretic | medication that reduces fever. |
| antiseptic | substance that slows or stops growth of microorganisms on surfaces. |
| bradykinins | chemicals produced by the body responsible for inflammation and pain. |
| comedone | a plug of keratin and sebum within a hair follicle that is blackened at the surface also called a blackhead. |
| corticosteroid | steroid produced by the adrenal cortex |
| debride | to remove dead or damaged tissue |
| dermis | thick layer of connective tissue that contains collagen |
| desquamation | process of shedding the top layer of skin also known as exfoliation |
| epidermis | outermost layer of the skin |
| histamine | substance that interacts with tissues, producing some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction |
| keratolytic | medication that causes shedding of the outer layer of skin |
| osteoarthritis | degenerative joint disease |
| prophylaxis | treatment given before an event or exposure to prevent the occurrence of a condition or symptom |
| pruritus | itching |
| rheumatoid arthritis | progressive degenerative and crippling immune disease |
| rhinitis | inflammation of the lining of the nose |
| sebaceous glands | skin glands responsible for the secretion of oil called sebum |
| sebum | oily substance that lubricates the skin and retains water to provide moisture |
| skin protectant | substance that acts as a barrier between the skin and an irritant |
| steroid | messenger chemical produced by the body that helps fight inflammation and pain |
| subcutaneous layer | deepest layer of the skin that consists of fat cells and collagen |
| sweat glands | found in the dermis and activated in response to increased body temperature to cool the body |
| systemic | pertaining to the entire body |
| urticaria | red welts that arise on the surface of the skin also known as hives |
| vasodilation | widening of the blood vessels that allows for increased blood flow. |
