| analgesic | medication that relieves pain by reducing the perception of pain. |
| anaphylactic shock | severe allergic reaction that causes a rapid decrease in the blood pressure. ventricular tachycardia, and constriction of the airways. a medical emergency that will cause death if not treated immediately. |
| antigen | stimulates the production of antibodies. |
| anti-inflammatory | medication that reduces swelling, redness and pain and promotes healing. |
| antipyretic | medication that reduces fever. |
| antiseptic | substance that slows or stops growth of microorganisms on surfaces. |
| bradykinins | chemicals produced by the body responsible for inflammation and pain. |
| comedone | a plug of keratin and sebum within a hair follicle that is blackened at the surface also called a blackhead. |
| corticosteroid | steroid produced by the adrenal cortex |
| debride | to remove dead or damaged tissue |
| dermis | thick layer of connective tissue that contains collagen |
| desquamation | process of shedding the top layer of skin also known as exfoliation |

| histamine | substance that interacts with tissues, producing some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction |
| keratolytic | medication that causes shedding of the outer layer of skin |
