Structures & Types of Poetry

| Blank Verse | Unrhymed but metered poetry |
| Couplet | A pair of lines |
| Free Verse | Poetry lacking both rhyme and meter |
| Meter | A rhythm of stressed and unstressed syllables |
| Foot | A patterned set of two or three syllables |
| Iamb | A foot of one unstressed syllable, then one stressed syllable |
| Trochee | A foot of one stressed syllable, then one unstressed syllable |
| Anapest | A foot of two unstressed syllables, then one stressed syllable |
| Dactyl | A foot of one stressed syllable, then two unstressed syllables |
| Quatrain | A group of four lines |
| Refrain | A repeated element at regular intervals, like the chorus of a song |
| Stanza | A group of lines separated from other groups by line breaks |
| Epic | Book-length, narrative poetry |
| Lyric Poem | A poem attempting to convey either an insight or an emotional impression to a reader |
| Narrative Poem | A poem that tells a story |
