| Term | Definition | Example |

| Hyperbole | An extravagant exaggeration or stretching the truth. | If I don't get this job I'm going to die! |
| Metaphor | A comparison between unlike things NOT using like or as. | He is a tiger on the soccer field. |
| Onomatopoeia | Words whose sound suggests its meaning | Boom! Crack! Splash! |
| Personification | Giving human qualities to ideas and things | The trees danced in the wind. |
| Simile | A comparison using like or as. | He is as fast as a tiger. |
| Idiom | A phrase with a special meaning that cannot be figured out from the literal meaning of the words | It's raining cats and dogs outside! |
| Irony | the use of words that mean the opposite of what you really think (usually funny) | The fire station burns down. |
| Alliteration | Repeated consonant sounds at the beginning of words | Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers |
| Assonance | Repeated vowel sounds | Sam's cat had a nap on the black sedan |
| Symbol | Something that represents an idea | A heart is a symbol of love |
| Imagery | Creating pictures for the senses by using vivid descriptions | The slender man in the purple velvet suit slunk incognito down the busy, dusty street. |
