| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Biodiesel | A diesel-equivalent, processed fuel derived from biological sources (such as vegetable oils), that can be used in unmodified diesel-engine vehicles |
| Carbon neutral | Of or relating to fuels that produce an amount of carbon dioxide when burned that is equal to or less than the amount taken up by the plants from which they are made. |
| Pressure/temperature/volume equation | p = t/v |
| Intake stroke | downward movement of the piston in an internal combustion engine by which fuel and air are drawn into a cylinder |
| Compression stroke | upward movement of piston in an internal combustion engine forcing gasoline and in air into smaller volume |
| Power stroke | spark plug uses electrical energy to ignite the compressed mixture as the heated gas expands pushing down the piston thus the piston moves the crankshaft |
| Exhaust stroke | crankshaft turns, and the piston is forced back up pushing exhaust gas out of the cylinder |
| Closed system | A system that allows the exchange of energy, but not matter, between the system and its surroundings. |
| Closed system engine | in a closed system engine the working fluid is passed through the engine and the working fluid stays intact as only the energy is transferred |
| Stirling engine | A closed systema system that can exchange both matter and energy with its surroundings piston engine containing a working gas that is transferred between hot and cold heat exchangers to move the pistons. The source of heat comes from outside the engine |
| Open system | a system that can exchange both matter and energy with its surroundings |
