Motion & Force Test

vocabulary terms and formulas for PS.10

TermDefinition
inertia the tendency of an object to resist any change in motion
weight a measure of the force of gravity on an object
mass a measure of how much matter is in an object
friction the force that one surface exerts on another when the two surfaces rub against each other
law of conservation of momentum the rule that in the absence of outside forces the total momentum of the objects that interact will not change
Newton's First Law of Motion says that an object at rest tends to stay at rest, and an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless a net force acts on it
Newton's Second Law of Motion a net force acting on an object causes the object to accelerate in the direction of the force (force=mass x acceleration)
centripetal force any force that causes an object to move in a circle
force a push or pull exerted on an object
gravity the force that pulls objects towards each other
newton the SI unit for force
balanced forces equal forces acting on an object in opposite directions-causes the object not to change position
velocity speed in a given direction
acceleration the rate at which velocity changes
deceleration to decrease in velocity
reference point a place or object that is used for comparison to determine if an object is in motion
constant speed a speed that does not vary
projectile an object that is thrown
unbalanced forces forces that produce a nonzero net force, which changes an object's motion
acceleration due to gravity 9.8 m/s2
net force the overall force on an object when all the individual forces acting on it are added together
formula for average speed v= d/t
formula for acceleration a= (vf - vi)/t
formula for force F= m * a
Newton's Third Law of Motion says that for every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
