1. Developing country A poor country whose citizens mostly work in agriculture
2. Life expectancy the average number of years a person from a certain group lives
3. Natural Resources Naturally occurring materials that can be used by humans
4. Scarcity Inadequate supply or shortage
5. Civil war A fight between different groups within a country
6. Colony Overseas territory or settlement tied to a parent country
7. Coral reef Structure formed by the skeletons of small sea animals
8. Deforestation Widespread cutting of forests
9. Desertification Process by which grasslands change to desert
10. Drought Long period of extreme dryness and water shortages
11. Genocide Mass murder of a people because of their race, religion, ethnicity, or culture
12. Immigrant A person who moves to a new country to make a permanent home
13. Imperialism System of building foreign empires for military and trade advantages
14. Indigenous Native to or originating from a place
15. Industrialized country Country in which a great deal of manufacturing occurs
16. Literacy rate Percentage of people who can read and write in an area
17. Overgraze To allow animals to strip areas so bare that plants cannot grow back
18. Refugee Person who flees to another country to avoid persecution or disaster
19. Savanna Broad grassland with few trees in the tropics
20. Subsistence farm Small plot where a farmer grows only enough food to feed his own family
