States of Matter

QuestionAnswer
What are the 3 parts of the Kinetic Theory? 1. all matter is made of particles. 2. Those particles are in constant random motion. 3. The particles collide with each other & the sides of their container transferring energy without loss.
What are the 4 states of matter? Solid, liquid, gas, plasma
In which state of matter do the particles move the slowest? Solid
Among the 3 states of matter found naturally on earth, in which state of matter do the particles move the fastest? Gas
What is Kinetic Energy? Energy in the form of motion.
What is Potential Energy? Stored energy
At what point does a substance change from a solid to a liquid? Melting point.
At what point does a substance change from a liquid to a gas? Boiling point.
At what point does a substance change from a gas to a liquid? Condensation point
At what point does a substance change from a liquid to a solid? Freezing point
At what point does a substance change from a gas to a solid or from a solid to a gas? Sublimation point
At what point does a substance change from a liquid to a gas without boiling? Evaporation point
As the motion of particles increases, what happens to the temperature? Temperature rises.
As heat decreases, what happens to the motion of particles? Motion slows.
What is a Heating Curve? A graph showing changes in state due to the addition of heat.
What does the root word "therm" mean? heat
Expansion? to get larger
As water freezes what happens to its size? Expands
When most substances freeze, what happens to their size? Contracts
Contract? to get smaller
What is a Physical Property? A characteristic of a substance by itself, such as color, size, shape, state.
What is a Chemical Property? The way in which a substance reacts with one or more other substances, changing the identities of the substances involved.
What is a Physical Change? A change in a physical property.
What is a Chemical Change? A change in the identity of a substance.
How is a Chemical Change represented in chemical shorthand? by a Chemical Equation
Name 3 types of Intermolecular Forces. Dispersion, Dipole-dipole, & Hydrogen.
Which intermolecular force is the weakest? Dispersion.
Which intermolecular force is the strongest? Hydrogen bond.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
