Introduction to Electricity

TermDefinition
law of electric charges state that like charges repel and opposite charges attract
electric force the force between charged objects
conduction occurs when electrons are transferred from one object to another by direct contact
induction occurs when charges in an uncharged object are rearranged without direct contact with a charged object
conductor a material in which charges can move easily
insulator a material in which charges cannot easily move
static electricity the buildup of electric charges on an object
electric discharge the loss of static electricity as charges move off an object
When objects are rubbed together, friction transfers electrons between them, causing one to become positive and the other negative Describe how an object is charged by friction.
they are both electric discharges that occur quickly and with a flash of light How is a shock you receive from a doorknob similar to a bolt of lightening/
cell a device that produces an electric current by converting chemical energy into electrical energy
battery converts chemical energy to electrical energy and contains several cells
potential difference the energy per unit charge; expressed in volts (V)
photocell the part of a solar panel that converts light into electrical energy
thermocouple a device that converts thermal energy into electric energy
an electrolyte and two electrodes What are the parts of a cell?
current the rate at which charge passes a given point
voltage the difference in energy per unit charge as a charge moves between two points in the path of a current
resistance the opposition to the flow of electric charge
electric power the rate at which electrical energy is used to do work
circuit a complete, closed path through which electric charges flow
load a device that uses electrical energy to do work
series circuit a circuit in which all parts are connected in a single loop
parallel circuit a circuit in which different loads are located on separate branches
The energy source provides electrical energy; the load is any device that uses electrical energy to do work; wires connect the energy source to the load Name and describe the 3 essential parts of a circuit.
they create gaps in a circuit when the current gets too high, preventing charges from flowing. How do fuses and circuit breakers protect your home against electrical fires?

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
