Figurative Language

TermDefinition
Alliteration The repetition of a single letter in the alphabet.
Metaphor A comparison that compares two unlike things. Does not use like or as.
Simile A comparison that compares two unlike things using like or as.
Personification Speaking of something that is not human as if it has human abilities.
Hyperbole A great exaggeration. Usually funny and it is not supposed to be taken literally.
Idiom A group of words whose meanings are different from the ordinary meaning of the words.
Onomatopoeia This refers to the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named.
