| Social Psychology | the scientific field that seeks to understand the nature and causes of individual behavior & thought in social situations; based on the idea that being in a social situation can affect how we may think, feel, & behave |
| Science | Refers to 2 things: a set of values, and several methods that can be used to study a wide range of topics |
| Planning Fallacy | A strong tendency to believe that projects will take less time than they actually do or, alternatively, that we can accomplish more in a given period of time than is really true |
| Social Behavior | How people act in social situations |
| Social Cognition | How people attempt to make sense out of the social world & to understand themselves & others |
| Anxious Attachment | Anxiety over the possibility of losing a partner and/or an inability to get as close to partners as one would prefer |
| Multicultural Perspective | perspective that carefully and clearly recognizes the potential importance of gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, SES, religious orientation, etc. |
| Systematic Observation | Carefully observing behavior as it occurs |
| Naturalistic Observation | observation of people's behavior in natural settings |
| Mediating Variables | Variable that is influenced by an IV and then influences a DV; help explain why or how specific variables influence social behavior or thought in certain ways |
| Deception | Technique where researchers withhold info about the purposes or procedures of a study from people participating in it |
| Informed Consent | procedure in which research participants are provided with as much info as possible about a research project before deciding whether to participate in it |
| Debriefing | Providing participants with a full description of the purposes of a study after they have participated in it |
| Social Cognition | How we think about the social world, our attempts to understand it, and ourselves and our place in it |
| Heuristics | Simple rules for making complex decisions of drawing inferences in a rapid manner and seemingly effortless manner |
| Affect | Our current feelings our moods |
| Information Overload | Where the demands on our cognitive system are greater than its capacity |
