Poetry Terms

Simile A comparison of two things using the words “like” or “as”.
Metaphor A statement that one thing is the same as another. Literally, it is not, but the metaphor creates an association between the two things.
Stanza A method of organizing poetry, similar to a paragraph.
Rime Scheme Recurring patterns of rime in a poem. Usually notated with small letter a’s, b’s, c’s, etc.
Refrain A line or stanza in a poem that repeats itself.
Alliteration The repetition of like consonant sounds.
Assonance The repetition of like vowel sounds.
Cacophony A harsh, discordant sound.
Euphony Sounds that are harmonious or pleasing to the ear.
Onomatopoeia An attempt to make a word from a sound.
Rime Two or more words with a similar vowel sound.
Consonance Two or more words with similar consonant sounds.
