| Simile | A comparison of two things using the words “like” or “as”. |
| Metaphor | A statement that one thing is the same as another. Literally, it is not, but the metaphor creates an association between the two things. |
| Stanza | A method of organizing poetry, similar to a paragraph. |
| Rime Scheme | Recurring patterns of rime in a poem. Usually notated with small letter a’s, b’s, c’s, etc. |
| Refrain | A line or stanza in a poem that repeats itself. |
| Alliteration | The repetition of like consonant sounds. |
| Assonance | The repetition of like vowel sounds. |
| Cacophony | A harsh, discordant sound. |
| Euphony | Sounds that are harmonious or pleasing to the ear. |
| Onomatopoeia | An attempt to make a word from a sound. |
| Rime | Two or more words with a similar vowel sound. |
| Consonance | Two or more words with similar consonant sounds. |
