TermMeaning
unison all the instruments play the same notes at the same time - as one voice
riff a short melodic idea or phrase, used in the background
walking bass the bass line made of up and down steps
ostinato repeated melodic theme
shuffle the basic Swing rhythm, accented on 2 and 4
groove when the bass plays ostinato while the drums play a repeated set pattern
stacctato playing the notes disconnected from each other
legato playing notes smoothly connected
accents certain notes are played suddenly louder
mute a device which muffles and/or changes the sound of an instrument
voicing assigning different notes of a chord to different instruments according to their range
